Apple has announced the next iPhone, the iPhone 3GS. The S supposedly stands for speed. The look of the new iPhone is basically the same as the old one. Key upgrades are found in performance. Apple says it will be able to perform many of its functions “up to” two times faster, the key words being “up to.”

Some new features of the iPhone 3GS is its 3-megapixel camera w/ auto-focus and improved low-light sensitivity. It now has a special macro mode, along with automatic white balance and exposure. It’s also able to capture video at 640 x 480 at 30 frames per second. If you want to edit video, there’s a new video editing app included, allowing you to edit clips using multi-touch control.

Another long awaited improvement is extended battery life. Apple says the iPhone 3GS will last nine hours using WiFi, compared to six hours before, will play video for 10 hours, up from seven hours with the iPhone 3G. You’ll get 30 hours of audio playback is opposed to 24, and 12 hours of talk time on 2G instead of 10 hours, but 3G talk time is the same at five hours.

iPhones will be offered in three different memory sizes: a 32GB model selling for $299, a 16GB for $199, and an 8GB iPhone 3G for $99. All will be for sale starting June 19.

Google G1 Android vs Apple iPhone

Seth Porges over at Popular Mechanics wrote an interesting article discussing Google’s G1 and Apple’s iPhone. It discusses the pros and cons of each device.

If Google wants to dominate the mobile market, it will have to prove that it can out-do Apple’s iPhone, the market leader when it comes to function, style and usability. While many of the G1’s features are direct responses to iPhone shortcomings, there are still many aspects in which the iPhone will remain dominant. Here are five ways the G1 beats the iPhone, and five ways it doesn’t… yet.

Apple iPhone Clamshell in the Future

apple iphone clamshell cell phone

Looks like Apple might release a clamshell iPhone in the near future. This is an illustration of what it might look like found in a recent Apple patent application.

In a closed position, this clamshell becomes an ordinary slate tablet computer, with a multi-touch touchscreen. If you open the flip to up-to 160 degree angle, it becomes a normal laptop computer. Interesting concept if you ask me.
